I watch a lot of entertainment on the internet. Most of it is related to video games as my Youtube subscription list attests to. It gives me an opportunity to talk about some of the content I watch and why I come back for repeated viewings. Right now, when I want to see video game reviews, I go to the Shot Gaming channel. I find it to be an informative and entertaining look at the latest PC gaming has to offer, even if I don’t drink all too often.
Shot Gaming is a video game web site primarily dedicated to computer games released through Valve’s Steam digital distribution system. The main drive to the channel is the weekly series Steam Shots, in which a reviewer overviews the last five games on the Steam new releases list. Typically this involves a brief description of the game, the reviewer’s experience with the title, and a score given depending on how much you would need to drink before justifying a purchase or actually playing it yourself. I found out about Steam Shots through the Something Awful forums where the reviewer posts as Axemaniac. Apparently he has been doing these reviews for years, noting that he gets the chance to score review copies of games especially from indie developers that could use the attention. I value the reviewer’s opinion on games, especially since he admits when he isn’t personally interested in the game and will point out when a game is available on a competing digital distribution service with better quality or a cheaper price. Additionally, Steam Shots has a segment called Last Call in which the reviewer checks on games mentioned in a previous episode and lets you know if the game deserves a higher or lower score.
Shot Gaming is not appropriate for all audiences, and the reviewer is aware of this. One time Steam Shots covered a game with an anime ascetic, resulting in negative feedback accusing the reviewer of not playing enough of the game and ridiculing the art style instead. Steam Shots at first criticized the free to play game Path of Exile, but the episode was reuploaded with perceived negative observations replaced with delicious Charleston Chew. The show does not cover any games released outside of Steam, and because of a vacation months ago the show needs to cover ten games per episode to even keep up. I recommend viewers should at least watch the Shot Gaming videos about other topics so you know the point of view character is some guy getting wasted on alcohol and sitting alone at his computer. That way, when you see the joke reviews in the middle of some episodes, you’re not completely caught off guard.
Shot Gaming is
currently my most trusted source for reviews on PC games. The Steam Shots show
is a great look at computer games old and new, and once in a while the channel
stumbles out of a drunken haze to deliver quality video games journalism.
Subscribe to the show via the YouTube channel, or watch the shows on the
